Gandhi Smrithi, Raj Ghat and the Freedom Fight Doll Museum @ New Delhi

Finally..did breath in some life to my Quick Picks foodie blog after months of hibernation, and in goes some fresh air .... here as well.

August 15th, 1947 - Indian Independence Day.

And so, decided to post something related to the date.

A photo-post on our visit to the Gandhi Smrithi and Gandhi Memorial in New Delhi.

Gandhi Smriti. New Delhi, formerly known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan, is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, situated on Tees January Road, in New Delhi, India. It is the location where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.

Thats my men with the statue at the Entrance of the Smriti.

This larger than life statue of Mahatma Gandhi welcomes the visitors at the main entrance of the Gandhi Smriti. Gandhiji is with a boy and a girl holding a dove in their hands standing on either side, emerging out of the globe, symbolising his universal concern for the poor and the deprived. It is the work of the renowned sculptor Sri Ram Sutar. The legend at the base of the sculpture says, "My Life is My Message".

The museum in the building houses a number of articles associated with Gandhi's life and death. Visitors can tour the building and grounds, viewing the preserved room where Gandhi lived and the place on the grounds where he was shot while holding his nightly public walk.

The Martyr's Column which marks the place where Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation" was assassinated.

The Memorial consists of Visual Aspects to perpetuate the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the noble ideals he represented and ofcourse....

Educative Aspects to focus concentrated attention on certain values of life that made Gandhi a Mahatma.

On display in the Museum are photographs, sculptures, paintings, frescos, inscriptions on rocks and relics pertaining to the years Mahatma Gandhi spent here.

The meagre personal effects of Gandhiji too are carefully preserved.

The Doll Museum depicts in miniature scale, the life of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Freedom Fight for Independence.

Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Situated in a park in the banks of the Yamuna River, it includes burial sites of other Indian rulers like Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Places definitely worth a visit if in the Capital.
